This sword is hardened with clay, it is a differential blade hardening method and the most common steel hardening method. The uncured blade is coated with a mixture of clay, water, charcoal ash and finely ground sandstone. The cutting edge of the sword is very thinly coated with this clay mixture, and the rest of the blade is thickly coated.
While the clay coating mixture is being applied, the blade is reheated to a temperature of approximately 800-900 ° C. It is then cooled abruptly. Due to the thinner coating of the clay layer on the cutting side, this area cools faster than the rest of the blade. Rapid cooling changes the structure of the previously heated metal. At the same time, the cutting edge creates more hardness than the rest of the sword.
Honsanmai blades were forged by an exclusive process, using steels of different hardness rather than the same grade.
Honsanmai is a complex construction because it includes 3 different hardnesses. However, it is often used due to its relatively simple structure.
The hardness of the core and back of this sword is 40-42 HRC. The cutting edge of the blade has a hardness of 58-60 HRC. The hardness of the sides is 50-52 HRC. The blades were treated by hardening the clay.
Only the highest quality materials and all fittings made of metal were used for this sword.
